Learner plate designation
A 1L is a first-year law student.
The term comes from the numbering system used in American law schools, where students progress through 1L, 2L, and 3L years.
The 1L workload is notoriously intense.
The experience has become culturally recognizable through books and films depicting the pressure of that first year.
