woolgatherers

Lost in thought

Woolgatherers are people lost in idle daydreaming or aimless thought.

The term comes from the old practice of gathering tufts of wool caught on bushes and fences—a task requiring wandering and little concentration.

Someone who lets their mind drift during a meeting or loses track of conversation might be called a woolgatherer: The professor's lecture was wasted on a room full of woolgatherers.
