A wifebeater is a man who physically abuses his wife.
The term also refers to a sleeveless white undershirt, the stereotype being that such garments are worn by men who beat their wives: He answered the door in a stained wifebeater.
The shirt sense is common enough that it appears on retail tags, though some find this objectionable.
