welshing

Dodging a debt

Welshing is failing to honor a bet or obligation, especially after the outcome is known.

Someone who welshes takes the winnings and disappears, or simply refuses to pay up: He welshed on the bet when he lost.

The term likely derives from a stereotype about Welsh people and is considered offensive by some, though many users are unaware of this origin.

Also spelled welching.
