was there
Had been attending
Was there is an inquiry about past existence or presence, typically opening a yes-or-no question: Was there any mail today?
Was there a reason you called?
It can also function as an emphatic assertion when inverted: There was a party, was there?
The phrase sometimes expresses skeptical challenge: Was there ever any doubt?
