warmed the cockles of someone's heart
Brought inner joy
Warmed the cockles of someone's heart means to give someone a feeling of deep contentment or affection.
The cockles are the innermost part of one's being—the heart's heart.
Something that warms them brings genuine emotional satisfaction: Seeing my grandchildren play together warmed the cockles of my heart.
The phrase is slightly old-fashioned and often used with gentle humor.
