verbal filler

Meaningless spoken insertions

Verbal filler refers to sounds and words that fill pauses in speech without adding meaning: um, uh, like, you know, basically.

Speakers use them unconsciously while thinking or transitioning between thoughts.

Though often criticized as signs of inarticulate speech, fillers are natural features of spontaneous conversation and can signal that a speaker isn't finished talking.
