unofficial visit
Off-the-record stop
An unofficial visit is a trip to a college campus that a prospective student-athlete arranges and pays for themselves, as opposed to an official visit funded by the school.
The term comes from NCAA recruiting rules, which limit the number and timing of official visits but place fewer restrictions on unofficial ones: He took unofficial visits to six schools before narrowing his choices.
