unhardening

Losing its firmness

Unhardening is the process of making something less hard, rigid, or resistant.

In computing and security contexts, it refers to reversing protective measures that were put in place to secure a system—removing restrictions, disabling firewalls, or opening access points: We had to do some unhardening before the legacy software would run.

The word also applies to emotional softening: the gradual unhardening of his attitude toward forgiveness.
