unfocussing

Letting attention drift

Unfocussing is the act of letting focus soften or dissolve—the opposite of concentrating.

Eyes unfocussing go slightly blurry; attention unfocussing drifts away from a fixed point: She found herself unfocussing, staring past the screen.

The spelling with double s is a British variant; unfocusing is more common in American English.
