underground test
Buried trial detonation
An underground test is a nuclear weapon detonation conducted beneath the earth's surface, typically in a shaft or tunnel.
This method contains radioactive fallout better than atmospheric tests and became standard practice after the 1963 Limited Test Ban Treaty prohibited above-ground testing: The seismic activity was traced to an underground test in the desert.
