underextending
Not fully lengthening
Underextending is failing to stretch something—a concept, a resource, oneself—as far as it could reasonably go.
The term appears in developmental psychology, where children underextend words by applying them too narrowly: calling only their own pet "dog" while not recognizing other dogs as dogs.
More broadly, underextending suggests holding back when fuller application is possible: The budget was underextended, leaving funds unspent.
