the customer is always right
Merchant's concession mantra
A business motto meaning that customer satisfaction should be the priority, and complaints should be addressed rather than disputed.
The phrase is often invoked sarcastically by employees who know the customer is plainly wrong: She demanded a refund for a product we don't sell, but hey, the customer is always right.
Sometimes extended to "the customer is always right in matters of taste"—acknowledging that businesses should stock what people want to buy, not what they ought to want.
