the burbs

Beyond city limits

The burbs is an informal shortening of the suburbs—residential areas surrounding a city.

The term often carries connotations of conformity, boredom, or middle-class domesticity: We moved out to the burbs when the kids started school.

Sometimes used dismissively by city dwellers to suggest cultural blandness.
