the Great
Ruler's honorific suffix
A title added after the name of historical rulers and leaders who achieved exceptional power, military conquest, or lasting influence: Alexander the Great, Catherine the Great, Frederick the Great.
The designation typically reflects historical consensus rather than official title—these figures expanded empires, transformed institutions, or left marks so deep that ordinary epithets seemed inadequate.
Occasionally used ironically or self-mockingly: I am Steve the Great, master of parallel parking.
