terminal lucidity

Pre-death mental surge

Terminal lucidity is a sudden return of mental clarity and energy in someone who has been severely impaired—typically a dying patient with dementia or other cognitive decline.

The person may recognize family members, speak coherently, or recall memories after months of unresponsiveness.

It often occurs hours or days before death: She hadn't spoken in weeks, but experienced a moment of terminal lucidity and asked for her daughter by name.

The phenomenon remains poorly understood medically.
