tea eggs
Cracked shell infusion
Tea eggs are a Chinese snack of hard-boiled eggs simmered in spiced tea and soy sauce.
The shells are gently cracked before simmering, allowing the dark liquid to seep through and create a marbled pattern on the white.
They're sold by street vendors and convenience stores throughout East Asia: I grabbed a couple of tea eggs from 7-Eleven.
