street robbery
Public theft, force
Street robbery is theft accomplished through force or threat of force in a public place—taking someone's wallet, phone, or bag by confrontation rather than stealth.
The term distinguishes from pickpocketing or burglary: Street robbery has increased in the downtown area.
Also called mugging, though street robbery is the more formal, legal term.
