Illegal surrogate buying
A straw purchase is buying something on behalf of someone who cannot legally buy it themselves.
The term appears most often with firearms—a person with a clean record buys a gun for someone prohibited from owning one: He was convicted of making straw purchases for gang members.
The practice also occurs with alcohol, tobacco, and vehicles used to evade taxes or hide assets.
