southern soul

Warmth of Dixie

Southern soul is a style of rhythm and blues that emerged in the American South during the 1960s, characterized by gospel-influenced vocals, horn sections, and a raw, emotionally direct sound.

The genre developed primarily at studios in Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and other Southern cities: Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin defined the southern soul sound.

Distinguished from the smoother Motown style by its grittier production and deeper roots in Black church music.
