shanking it
Ball goes sideways
Shanking it means hitting a badly misdirected shot, especially in golf, where the ball flies sharply off course after striking the club's hosel rather than the face.
The term extends to other sports and activities where execution goes wildly wrong: I was shanking it all day on the driving range.
More broadly, shanking it can mean failing or botching something badly.
