security classification
Document access level
Security classification is a designation assigned by governments and organizations to information, documents, or materials based on how sensitive they are and how much damage unauthorized disclosure could cause.
Common levels in the U.S. system include Confidential, Secret, and Top Secret, each requiring different handling procedures and access restrictions.
A person must have appropriate clearance to view classified materials: She didn't have the security classification needed to access the intelligence report.
The classification also determines how documents must be stored, transmitted, and eventually declassified.
