russets
Brown-skinned apple variety
Russets are a variety of potato with rough, netted brown skin and white flesh, prized for baking and frying: Idaho russets make the best french fries.
The word also describes a reddish-brown color, and russet apples have that characteristic mottled skin.
Historically, russet was a coarse homespun cloth worn by country people.
