roller derbies

Wheeled contact sport

Roller derbies is the plural of roller derby, a contact sport played on roller skates.

Two teams skate counterclockwise around an oval track while designated scorers called jammers try to lap opposing players.

The sport emerged in the 1930s as entertainment, declined, then revived in the 2000s with a grassroots, often women-dominated culture: She joined one of the local roller derbies last year.
