pupas
Pre-butterfly insect stages
Pupas is the plural of pupa, the life stage between larva and adult in insects that undergo complete metamorphosis.
During this stage, a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly, a maggot into a fly.
The pupa is typically encased in a protective covering—a cocoon or chrysalis—while the body restructures entirely.
The pupas overwintered in the soil.
