preignition
Before spark fires
Preignition is the premature ignition of fuel in an internal combustion engine—before the spark plug fires.
This causes engine knock, reduced power, and potential damage.
The fuel ignites from hot spots in the cylinder rather than the spark: The mechanic diagnosed preignition from carbon buildup on the pistons.
