piece worker
Paid by unit
A piece worker is someone paid by the unit of work completed rather than by time worked.
The term applies especially to manufacturing and garment work, where wages depend on how many items a worker produces: The piece workers rushed to meet their daily quota.
The system incentivizes speed but can lead to exploitation when rates are set too low.
