A pedophile is a person who is sexually attracted to children.
The term is clinical in origin but now appears widely in news coverage and public discourse about child sexual abuse.
While psychiatry distinguishes between the attraction itself (pedophilia) and acting on it, common usage often applies pedophile to anyone who sexually abuses children.
The word carries extreme stigma and is among the most damning labels in contemporary society.
