Participation rate measures the proportion of a population actively engaged in something, most often employment.
The labor force participation rate counts adults who are working or seeking work, excluding those who have stopped looking: The participation rate dropped during the recession as discouraged workers left the job market.
The term applies to other contexts—voter participation rate, program participation rate—wherever tracking engagement matters.
