An occupied sign is a small indicator, typically on a door or latch, showing that a space is in use—most commonly on bathroom stalls, airplane lavatories, or fitting rooms.
The sign usually toggles between "occupied" and "vacant" when the door is locked or unlocked: The occupied sign was showing, so I waited outside.
