nonplussing

Leaving someone stumped

Nonplussing is bewildering or confounding someone to the point where they don't know how to respond.

The word comes from the Latin for "no more"—as in, nothing more can be said or done.

A nonplussing situation leaves you at a loss: Her casual confession was nonplussing; I had no idea what to say.
