nickel and diming
Death by surcharges
Nickel and diming is wearing someone down through many small charges, fees, or requests rather than one significant demand.
The phrase evokes being bled slowly by trivial amounts: The airline nickel and dimes you with fees for bags, seats, and snacks.
It can also describe pestering with minor complaints or criticisms: Stop nickel and diming every decision I make.
