moving staircase

Mall's mechanical climb

A moving staircase is an escalator—a mechanized stairway with continuously circulating steps that carries passengers between floors.

The term is slightly old-fashioned, as escalator has become the standard word: The moving staircase at the department store fascinated children in the 1920s.
