modern art museum

A modern art museum is an institution dedicated to collecting, preserving, and exhibiting art from roughly the late 19th century onward—work that broke from traditional forms and techniques.

The term often overlaps with contemporary art museum, though purists distinguish modern (roughly 1860s–1970s) from contemporary (1970s–present).

We spent the afternoon at the modern art museum downtown.
