maximum wage

Top pay limit

A maximum wage is a legal or policy limit on how much a person can earn, the inverse of a minimum wage.

While minimum wages set floors, maximum wages set ceilings—typically proposed to reduce inequality or cap executive pay.

The concept appears more often in political debate than in actual law: Some activists call for a maximum wage tied to the lowest-paid worker's salary.
