loses the plot

Becomes completely unhinged

To lose the plot is to become confused, irrational, or unable to cope—as if you've lost track of what's happening in a story.

British in origin, it often describes someone whose behavior has become erratic or whose thinking has gone off the rails: He's completely lost the plot if he thinks that will work.

It can also mean simply losing focus or forgetting what you were doing.
