lets down

Breaks a promise

Lets down means to disappoint or fail to meet expectations: I trusted him, and he really let me down.

It can also mean to lower something physically—letting down a hem adds length to a garment, or you might let down your hair.

To let your guard down is to relax your defenses or become less cautious.
