knocking around

Drifting without purpose

Knocking around means moving about casually or aimlessly, often with no fixed purpose: I spent the summer knocking around Europe.

It can also mean being somewhere without particular use or attention: That old guitar has been knocking around the attic for years.

To knock around an idea is to discuss it informally: We knocked around a few possibilities before deciding.
