Hoydens is the plural of hoyden, an old-fashioned word for a boisterous, carefree girl who behaves in ways considered unladylike—running, climbing, roughhousing.
The term carries mild disapproval but also a hint of affection: The hoydens burst through the garden gate, mud-splattered and laughing.
Now rarely used outside period fiction.
