A guernsey is a type of thick knitted sweater, originally worn by fishermen from the Channel Islands.

The term is used especially in British and Australian English.

In Australian rules football, a guernsey is a team jersey, and to get a guernsey means to be selected for a team or, by extension, to gain approval or recognition: His proposal finally got a guernsey with the committee. (Capitalized Guernsey is the island.)
