going first

Being the opener

Going first means taking the initial turn or leading position in a sequence.

In games and competitions, going first can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on the rules: Rock paper scissors to see who goes first.

The phrase extends to any situation where someone acts before others: I'll go first since nobody else wants to volunteer.
