gets ahead of

Moves past someone

Gets ahead of means to move in front of something or to address it before it fully develops.

You might physically get ahead of a slow driver, or preemptively get ahead of a problem before it worsens: The company tried to get ahead of the scandal by issuing an apology.

To get ahead of oneself is to act prematurely or assume outcomes not yet secured.
