gacha machine
Coin-operated prize vendor
A gacha machine is a coin-operated dispenser that releases a random toy or trinket in a plastic capsule—you turn the crank, something drops out, and you get what you get.
The Japanese term has spread through mobile gaming, where "gacha" describes any system that lets players spend money for randomized rewards: I blew fifty dollars on the gacha trying to pull that character.
The appeal—and the controversy—lies in the gambling-like mechanics.
