fake paintings
Counterfeit canvas works
Fake paintings are works of art created to deceive—either forgeries attributed to famous artists or reproductions sold as originals.
The phrase covers both deliberate fraud and innocent copies later misrepresented: The museum discovered three fake paintings in its collection.
Art markets employ experts to detect fake paintings through analysis of materials, technique, and provenance.
