fae folk
Enchanted forest dwellers
Fae folk are supernatural beings from Celtic mythology and European folklore—fairies, sprites, elves, and similar creatures inhabiting a realm parallel to our own.
The term appears in fantasy fiction and among those who take folklore seriously: The old stories warn against offending the fae folk.
Using *fae* rather than *fairy* often signals a darker, more traditional conception of these beings as powerful and capricious rather than cute and harmless.
