extended families
Relatives beyond nuclear
Extended families are family units that include relatives beyond parents and children—grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws living together or maintaining close ties.
The term often contrasts with nuclear family: Three generations lived under one roof in their extended family.
Extended family can also refer collectively to all one's relatives: We invited the extended family to the reunion.
