dry fired
Pulled without ammunition
Dry fired describes pulling the trigger of a firearm without ammunition in the chamber.
Shooters dry fire to practice trigger control, aim, and muscle memory without expending rounds: I dry fired a hundred times before heading to the range.
With some older or rimfire guns, dry firing can damage the firing pin, though most modern firearms are designed to handle it safely.
