drill weekends
Monthly military training
Drill weekends are the monthly training periods when military reservists and National Guard members report for duty, typically one weekend per month.
The phrase comes from the drilling—repetitive practice of military procedures and skills.
Combined with annual training periods, drill weekends fulfill reserve service obligations: I can't make the wedding; I have drill weekend.
