different stories
Varying narrative versions
Different stories is a phrase indicating that accounts don't match—that people are giving conflicting versions of events: The witnesses told different stories about what happened.
It can also signal a change in circumstances: If we had more funding, it would be a different story.
To say that's a different story is to acknowledge a separate matter entirely.
