delayed penalty
Postponed hockey punishment
A delayed penalty occurs in hockey when a referee signals an infraction but delays stopping play until the offending team gains possession of the puck.
This allows the non-offending team to continue an offensive opportunity without being disadvantaged by the whistle.
The penalized player serves their time once play stops: The goalie headed to the bench during the delayed penalty, giving them an extra skater.
